Con Review Podcast Episodes

Ichibancon returned to the Embassy Suites in Concord, NC from February 13th–15th, marking my first visit to this particular convention. It's part of a Carolina trifecta (alongside Triad Animecon and Banzaicon), sharing staff, community, and social media presence. After years of bigger conventions like Otakon, Anime Boston, and Animazement, I was curious to see how this smaller, more regional event would feel. Being only twenty minutes from home made it an easy choice to finally check it out.
Spoiler: it was quirky, it was cozy, and I genuinely had a good time.
Full disclosure: Saturday was Valentine's Day, so I took Gretta out for dinner and missed some evening panels. Otherwise, I was there all three days.
The Guest List: Small but Solid
Ichibancon kept things intimate with their guest roster:
Voice Actors: Ben Balmaceda (One Piece, JoJo's Stone Ocean), Dawn M. Bennett (My Hero Academia, Fairy Tail, Re:Zero), Brittany Lauda (Dr. Stone, Made in Abyss, Higurashi, Darling in the Franxx), and Matt Shipman (Dr. Stone, Attack on Titan, SK8 the Infinity, My Hero Academia).
Musical Talent: Caleb Hyles (YouTube powerhouse who's worked on Made in Abyss and Kaiju No. 8) and Jonathan Young (metal covers of anime songs—need I say more?).
Performers: Chalk Twins, Samurai Dan Coglan (martial arts), Kazha (band), and Likely Vain (DJs).
Panelists: The Manly Battleships (a panel group I'd heard good things about).
A lean guest list, but everyone who showed up brought solid energy.
The Venue: Quirky, Compact, and a Little Confusing
Ichibancon lives in the Embassy Suites Concord—a smaller hotel convention setup. The dealer's room and artist alley shared one space (more on that later). The manga library was someone's personal collection housed in a custom-built traveling armoire, which is either brilliant or delightfully unhinged. I respect it.
There were five event rooms total: two main panel rooms at the ends of a hallway, three larger interior rooms for concerts, the flea market, and the art show. Plus four outdoor areas for photoshoots.
The guide map had a few typos. For a convention that's been running for sixteen years, it was a minor hiccup but nothing that ruined the experience.
My Panels: Two for Two
Friday – "I'm Still Not Old! More Main Characters Over 30" (11pm-12am, Event Room 5)The fourth iteration of this panel hit at 11 o'clock at night, and people still showed up. Adults craving representation cheered when I played clips from Tojima Wants to Be a Kamen Rider—a show about a middle-aged man living his tokusatsu dreams. That's the energy I'm here for. This panel never gets old, much like its protagonists.
Saturday – "Manga 101: A Beginner's Guide to Japanese Comics" (11-12pm, Event Room 4)Not a packed room, but the people who came were engaged. Good interactions, fun comments, and a few genuine "I had no idea manga was read right-to-left" moments. Sometimes you need to start with the basics, and this panel flowed nicely.
Panels I Attended: The Good, The Middling, and The Interesting
Friday
"Oishii! A Food Appreciation Panel Across Anime and Manga" – Paradox Panels brought the culinary content. I think my cooking in anime panel does it better, but they had some solid clips and tasty visuals.
"Be the Protagonist of Your Life!" – This felt like a mix between a motivational seminar and an MLM meeting. Not really my thing.
"Arcane 102" – A smaller room and a quieter energy. The two hosts clearly loved the show and had fun diving into their theories, though the dynamic felt more like a conversation between themselves than a full panel presentation. Still, they were passionate, and the handful of us in the audience (including one very enthusiastic Arcane fan) got to see some genuine fandom appreciation. Not my favorite panel of the weekend, but harmless.
Friday Events I Skipped (But Noted)
Otaku Art & Craft Fair – Industrial-scale artist alley energy. Sounded cool.
Speed Friending with Paradox Panels – Speed dating but platonic. A little odd, but I respect the attempt to help people make connections.
Bad Anime Night with Borderline Panels – MST3K for hentai and cringe series. Not my cup of tea, but the room seemed to enjoy it.
Friday Dances
Rose & Romance Formal Ball – This one made perfect sense. A romantic formal dance on Valentine's Day weekend? That's just good programming. The ballroom was decorated nicely, couples and groups alike were dressed up, and the atmosphere was genuinely sweet. It wasn't overwhelming—just a nice, classy way to spend a Friday evening at a convention. People slow danced, took photos, and actually leaned into the romance of the weekend. I appreciated that the con leaned into the date rather than pretending Valentine's Day wasn't happening.
Love & Heartbreak Emo Night – The rave option for those who wanted more energy and less candlelight. I get the theme, but calling it "Love & Heartbreak" on Valentine's weekend felt a bit too anti-love for my taste. They could have rebranded it to something like "Crimson Beats" or "Valentine's Voltage" and kept the same high-energy vibe without the downer framing. That said, the people who went seemed to have fun—just not my crowd.
Saturday
"A World of Swords: An Intro to Japanese TTRPGs" – Jimilia (who attended both of my panels—shout out) absolutely knows her stuff. She covered the history, the popular titles, and some delightfully niche Japanese games I'd never heard of. I now want to play Sword World. This panel was excellent.
"Gameshow Impossibru™: Tame That Tune!" – Standard music match game show. Fine for what it was.
"Cat Culture in Japan" – For the cat lovers in the room (myself included), this was a pure joy. No notes.
Saturday Panels I Missed
"1 Star! If I Could Give It Zero I Would" – A game show with a mean-spirited concept. Not for me.
"You're Wrong and You Should Feel Bad" – Deconstructing audience favorites in a confrontational way. I skipped it.
"Spy x Family and Cold War Germany" – Sounded genuinely fascinating. It was also at 1am, and I was running on fumes by then.
Sunday: The Otaku Flea Market
The Otaku Flea Market – This was the highlight of the weekend for me. They dedicated three of the five event rooms to this. Bring your old anime and manga memorabilia, sell it, make money. I walked away with $200 from stuff I was happy to part with. Lots of interactions, lots of hagglers, lots of fun. Made me wish I'd brought more inventory. If Ichibancon does one thing well, it's this.
Sunday Events I Skipped
"Around the Anime Fandom World in 60 Minutes" – Anime's global influence. Probably solid.
"NEW! 2025 Anime Tierlist! All 128 Shows!?!? (No Shot!)" – A tierlist panel that openly insulted two anime genres while doing it. I passed.
Dealer's Room, Artist Alley, and The AI Question
Dealer's Room – Decent size. Several small vendors. Not much I wanted to buy, which is probably good for my wallet.
Artist Alley – Shared the same room as the dealers, which made things feel a bit cramped. Some lovely homemade artwork alongside some AI-generated 3D prints. The AI presence is becoming more common across conventions, and it's something worth keeping an eye on.
Video Game Room – Pretty big, actually. A few cool games. I didn't spend much time there, but the space was respectable.
Music/Concert Stage – Concerts happened throughout the weekend with a mix of performers. Caleb Hyles and Jonathan Young drew decent crowds, and the smaller venue created an intimate vibe. Some sets were shorter than others, but the variety was nice to see.
Cosplay Contest – Three hours long. Some genuinely good costumes. Lots of Hazbin Hotel representation. No overarching theme, but the passion was there.
Art Installations – A chalkboard image of Apothecary Diaries worked on all weekend. Genuinely impressive. They also had a chalk wall where anyone could draw. Simple, interactive, and lovely.
Manga Library: The Traveling Armoire
The manga library was someone's personal collection housed in a custom-built mobile armoire. Late 2000s to early 2010s titles mixed with modern classics. The owner clearly knew what he was doing and loved sharing his collection. This is the kind of weird, passionate fandom energy I go to smaller conventions for.
Cosplay: Highlights from the Floor
Nothing overarching in terms of a theme, but plenty of standouts:
Multiple Maomaos (Apothecary Diaries)
A ton of video game characters (Pokémon, The Last of Us, Mega Man)
K-pop demon hunter costumes (yes, really)
A classic Kamen Rider in the Shin Kamen Rider outfit
The Rocketeer (unexpected but welcome)
Overall Vibe and Thoughts
Ichibancon is small. Sometimes awkwardly small. The layout has a few disjointed elements—panels scattered across the venue, minor typos in the program guide, a dealer's room that felt a little cramped with the artist alley sharing space. But here's the thing: the attendees did not care. They were having a great time. Their joy was infectious, and it made me enjoy this little convention more than I expected.
The convention seems to lean into two areas heavily: 1) swap meets/flea markets/otaku art fairs and 2) "ask the character" events. That's not a kiss of death—it just gives Ichibancon its own personality. The masquerade was lively, the Friday dances gave attendees options depending on their Valentine's mood, and the community was genuinely welcoming.
Will I go back? Yeah. The people are great, I made two hundred bucks selling old manga, and being able to drive home in twenty minutes certainly doesn't hurt. Hopefully next year they tighten up the map and schedule a bit, but even if they don't? I'll probably still show up.

Animazement returned to the Raleigh Convention Center from May 23rd–25th, now in its 28th year as a convention that started as a college film festival and grew into something genuinely special. My first visit was 2023—a smaller, cozy affair. This year? I went all in. Three panels, a mountain of hot takes, and zero regrets. Here's the breakdown.
The Guest List: Legends and Surprises
This year's roster was a beautiful mix of old-school heavyweights and modern talent:
Voice Actors: Ryuusei Nakao (Frieza himself!), Hiroaki Hirata (Sanji in One Piece), Chie Koujiro (Gintama's Space Okan), and Chika Sakamoto (Cat's Eye, Sailor Moon Stars) alongside newer stars like Laura Stahl (Promised Neverland) and Sarah Anne Williams (Kill la Kill, Madoka Magica).
Industry Titan: Masao Maruyama—co-founder of MAPPA, producer of Death Note, Hunter x Hunter, Card Captor Sakura, and Yawara! This man is a walking history lesson.
Performers: Aimi (musical contributions to Bleach, Gundam 00, Darker than Black) and The Jacabal's stage combat group brought energy to the main stage.
Returning Favorites: Trish Ledoux and Toshifumi Yoshida (Animerica royalty) plus Hiroshi Nagahama (the Uzumaki artist himself).
Cancellation Note: Taishi Yamabe (taiko drummer) had to bow out—hopefully next year.
My Panels: Three for Three
Friday – "I'm Still Not Old! More Protagonists Over 30" (4:00-5:30pm, Room 306A)The third iteration of this crowd-favorite drew another packed room of adults hungry for representation. The shift toward more female leads over 30 was hugely appreciated by the audience. Bonus highlight: someone shouted out a certain mad scientist who fights a platypus (Doofenschmertz for the next version? Noted.). Excellent reactions all around. This panel isn't going anywhere.
Saturday – "Horror in Anime & Manga" (10:00-12:00pm, Room 302Ab)Still a sellout. Still a blast. This year's revelation: Bondrewd (Made in Abyss) has officially surpassed Shou Tucker (Full Metal Alchemist) as fandom's most hated anime parent. That takes effort. Also, how have so many people never seen Wicked City? I love introducing fresh nightmares to fresh victims. Will absolutely present again.
Sunday – "Happily Ever After?! Wedded Bliss in Manga & Anime" (12:30-1:30pm, Room 306A)A brand new panel exploring marriage from newlyweds to old couples (and even a few divorcees). Decent turnout, solid engagement, but the pacing needs tweaking. Next iteration: more prizes, maybe a "best dressed couple" contest. Consider this a beta test—final version coming soon.
Panels I Attended: Hits, Misses, and Jealousy
Friday
"Original to Adaptation" – A fascinating study of how source material gets stretched, trimmed, or mangled in translation. Hosts had some visible tension, which honestly made it more entertaining.
"10 Anime Movies You May Have Missed" – Third Impact Anime knows their showmanship. Solid niche picks.
"The Rotund Mecha Gentleman" – Someone had the same brilliant idea as me but executed it better. Instead of the Gai Daigoji type, they focused on the Musashis of giant robot anime. I'm jealous. No notes. Just respect.
"Intro to Japanese Bookbinding" – Sounded fascinating. Room was packed. Couldn't get a spot. Maybe next year.
"Traveling Japan Your Way" – Solid advice for neophytes. Common sense for frequent travelers, but a few restaurant recommendations caught my interest.
Saturday
"Aged to Perfection" – A cosplay-centric discussion about aging in fandom. I was the only guy in the room. Surprisingly good to hear fellow "oldtaku" (still hate that term) share experiences.
"Let's Watch Crazy Japanese Commercials" – Exactly what it sounds like. Long Long Man still holds up. Packed room, no notes, pure comfort panel.
"Shojo Manga's Lost Generation" – Great premise about the Year 24 Group and shojo history. Poor execution. Under-researched and overly focused on a few creators. Strange coming from a panelist who's usually top-notch—maybe an off day.
"Showa: The Golden Era of Kaijus" – The Godzilla guys are back. Lots of kaiju, sentai, and unrefined chaos. Sometimes you want a cheap hamburger, and this hit the spot.
Sunday
"The Shockingly True History of Tokyopop" – I love a good Stu Levy/DJ Milky hate session. Covered the good, the bad, and the what were they thinking. Tokyopop is somehow still alive. This panel was well-researched and entertaining—which makes the shojo panel's quality drop even more confusing.
The Dealer's Room & Artist Alley
The dealer's room was organized but quiet for my wallet. Still feeling the absence of CheapManga.com and Sci-Fi Continuum. Discotek was there—I didn't buy anything this year. Instead, I grabbed custom dice for Gretta and one art piece. The shamisen sellers returned, and so did the guy selling $4 dorayaki. Priorities.
Artist Alley was separated from the dealer's room this year—a refreshing change. Lots of talented artists. Also a lot more AI art, which is now officially concerning. Standout: Goblin Growlers (pricey but looked fun).
Video Game Room & Music Stage
Video Game Room – Same setup as last year. Not a huge library, but people were playing. I crushed a rhythm game, got obliterated in the Gundam battle game, and somehow won a top-down space shooter (first time ever—only died about a thousand times).
Music/Concert Stage – Barely populated. Maybe 12 people for one concert. The rave at night was similarly sparse—apparently an offsite meetup pulled the crowd. Lots of drunk weirdos, which is fine. Fun fact: the convention center serves alcohol at night. That's dangerous.
Masquerade & Cosplay
The masquerade was packed with contenders—no overarching theme, just creativity. Cosplay highlights this year included:
Oscar from Rose of Versailles (classy)
A red-jacket Lupin III with a torn top hat (Lupin the First movie version)
Lina Inverse (always a win)
Multiple Maomaos (Apothecary Diaries)
A Ranma-kun and Ranma-chan rocking the new character design hair
Nothing overwhelmingly elaborate at the masquerade—lots of quick, clever designs. More contained than previous years, but still plenty of heart.
Manga Library, Board Games, and Vibes
Manga Library – The local library collaboration continues to impress, with an excellent catalog and the staff running it were lovely.
Board Game Library – Same as last year: great games, no one to play with. I didn't arrange a game again. Maybe next year I'll actually follow through.
Overall Vibe – Homey, accepting, low-stress. The weirdos come out at night, but that's part of the charm. The layout is now second nature, and the crowd felt engaged without being overwhelming. This is officially my favorite convention of the year (admittedly I've only been to one so far, but it wins by default).
Final Thoughts
Animazement 2025 delivered exactly what I wanted: solid panels, legendary guests, and a fan community that actually feels like a community. No corporate bloat. No chaos. Just anime fans being anime fans.

Animazement 2024 returned to the Raleigh Convention Center from May 23rd to 26th, marking another year of growth for this fan-driven event. What began in 1997 as a college film festival has evolved into a vibrant convention, and after my first positive experience in 2023, I dove in fully this year—panels, guests, and all. The result? A weekend that solidified Animazement as one of my favorite conventions on the circuit.
Guests & Highlights
This year’s lineup boasted an impressive mix of veteran voice actors and industry talent. Legendary seiyuu Toshio Furukawa (Kai Shiden in Gundam, Ataru in Urusei Yatsura) and Kikuko Inoue (Belldandy in Ah! My Goddess) drew crowds, while Noriko Hidaka (Akane in Ranma ½) and Shino Kakinuma (Naru in Sailor Moon) brought nostalgia to the forefront. On the English dub side, Erica Mendez (Ryuko in Kill la Kill, Gon in Hunter x Hunter) kept panels lively with her infectious energy.
Musical guests Angel-Taka, Kaizan Nitta, and Hakusui Ogiyama added a dynamic layer to the weekend, while industry veterans like Trish Ledoux (co-founder of Animerica), Hiroshi Nagahama (Uzumaki, Revolutionary Girl Utena), and Kohi Nagai (producer of My Hero Academia) offered deep dives into anime production.
Panels: Successes & Surprises
This year, I ran four panels—all well-received, but two stood out as highlights.
"The Live Action Equation: Anime in The Flesh" (Friday) sparked heated debates, especially over Netflix adaptations, while surprising attendees with the first live-action anime adaptation (hint: it wasn’t Death Note).
"I’m Not Old! Main Characters Over 30" (Saturday) packed the room, with fans passionately defending (or protesting) picks like Alucard (Hellsing) and Mr. Fujisawa (GTO).
"Horror in Anime & Manga" (Saturday night) remained a cult favorite, though I was shocked how few had seen Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.
"24 Manga Recommendations for Grown-Ups" (Sunday) was my personal triumph—engaging discussions, new readers hooked, and requests for sequels.
As an attendee, I caught Third Impact Anime’s "10 Years Later: Anime in 2014" (a brutal reminder of my age) and Fatal Fanatix’s "Cool Manga No Anime," which unearthed hidden gems I’ll definitely cover in future Wheel of Manga episodes. The "2025 Anime Music Challenge" game show had a clever gimmick (though I still think my Anime Tune Showdown format reigns supreme).
Dealer’s Room, Artist Alley & More
The Dealer’s Room was well-organized but lacked the rare manga finds of years past—CheapManga.com and Sci-Fi Continuum were sorely missed. Still, Discotek’s booth delivered, and I walked away with some stellar Blu-rays.
Artist Alley showcased incredible talent, though the creeping presence of AI art raised eyebrows. Meanwhile, the new Video Game Room—with arcade cabinets, consoles, and PCs—was a welcome addition, if not yet on par with Otakon’s legendary setup. The Manga Library, while smaller than Anime Next’s, impressed with its local-library collaboration system.
Cosplay & Vibe: Comfortably Crowded
Cosplay at Animazement is always a highlight, and this year’s eclectic mix included Maomao (Apothecary Diaries), Fallout wastelanders, Sakamoto (Sakamoto Days), and even Conker (Bad Fur Day). The atmosphere was relaxed yet energetic—crowded enough to feel lively, never suffocating. Attendees played board games, debated anime, and lingered in halls without the usual con stress.
Final Thoughts: A Keeper
Animazement retains the charm of a "homey" fan convention while expanding thoughtfully. The layout was intuitive, the panels diverse, and the attendees genuinely happy to be there. After two years, I’m convinced: this is a convention worth returning to. See you in 2025, AZ!
